Pursuit of Happiness

Lion Statue in London

Pursuit of Happiness

Envious of immortality
I stalk solemnly, a chided
lion waltzing through scenes
that seem steeped in a
forever that never dares
to stray far from the line.

Cookie cutter cultural
norms reveal familiar
scenes of caffeine corrupted
teens sipping on their truth
from magazines while
blind adolescence dreams
of something far greater
than what is in store.

Denied grace of ignorance
and its bliss, too old and
jaded for innocence, I still
prowl through the scenery,
saving these scenic routes for
days when I am particularly
in need of moral support.

This is just one of those poems that happened when the lines fell together. Sort of a thought of looking back on youth and life, and then thinking about moving forwards in it.

  1. This is written very well-a good visualization

    1. Thank you! I really wanted to try and make the imagery in it work.

Really nice. Paired with the picture, it really got me thinking. Thanks for posting.

    1. You’re welcome and thanks a million for reading!

  3. I like this poem a lot. I love how it seems to flow through using rhyme, alliteration, and assonance so smoothly. I had to read it a couple of times just to slow down my pace and actually read it. I just like the way it sounds so much.

    1. I’m really glad you enjoyed it! I was hoping it would end up flowing but I never know with the rabble that I end up typing. It was one of those ‘ It’s 3am I need to just schedule this post now and hope for the best’ maneuvers. 🙂

  4. This is a very good poem.

Hey, I’m writing a short story trilogy: “Life”, “Liberty”, and “The Pursuit of Happiness” which I hope to publish this year. I’ll see how it comes together, but I may be in touch about using this poem as a sort of prelude (with proper acknowledgement, of course).

    Good work.

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed it and that would be awesome! Just let me know 🙂

  5. Nice, I like this one. Agree about the picture; Got me thinking about who the speaker actually was.

    1. Thank you! Yeah, I loved how that picture was just perfect for the poem. One of those times where you see something and instantly go ‘yeah, that’s the one”.

  6. This is really good, but then again all the poetry I’ve seen from you so far is really good, so keep up the brilliance 🙂

    1. Awwwwww you are far too kind! Thank you and I am glad you enjoyed it 🙂

      1. You’re welcome, I’m glad I enjoyed it too 🙂

  7. I really like how this poem flows, not sure what it is exactly, but it sounded really nice in my head. And I love the bit about caffeine corrupted teens :). Poems that just unfold themselves are awesome, they’re usually the best ones.

    1. I’m really glad you enjoyed it! 🙂 To be honest, the line “caffeine corrupted teens sipping on their truth from magazines’ actually was a one liner I wrote back in 2007 and I was so happy I had a poem where it just flowed into it. Been saving that line for a long time lol

      1. Got to love it when these things work out like that 🙂

  8. So much beauty in this, and very well

      1. LOL. Well thank you 🙂 I was honestly worried about it being too over the top in the imagery department.

  9. I like this. As I started reading it I got this sort of Ginsberg voice in my head

    1. Ooooohhhh that’s quite a compliment lol Thank you 😀
