Like Christmas packages we rip
the beauty off of souls
searching deep inside for what?

No one ever really knows.

It’s short. It’s bittersweet. It’s Friday, folks! I hope you enjoyed this tiny little poem that was inspired directly from Charles Bukowski’s Alone With Everybody. I was reading over the poem and this one sort of came about. Thought you might enjoy it and, even if this one wasn’t your style, here’s to hoping that you find your weekend more to your liking!

Snow Birds

Snow Birds

Sparrows sit on snow,
the little ghosts who peck
and leave no steps,
and for whom themselves
can willingly alight,
spiriting away like a shade
departing from its
former life.

Hey there, folks. Today it might not be funny, but I get those small phrases stuck in my head sometimes and they come out as poems that I reckon might turn out alright. This one came from this morning, sipping on some energy and watching the sparrows sit on the snow. I admit there was a bit of envy there, as I had just gone out and stuck my leg through a few snow drifts and the snow had copped a feel up my leg by sneaking up  my pant leg. The first lines of this poem kinda just came to mind sitting there so, now, here they are for you. I do hope you enjoy.

Here’s to hoping your day flies by and that you’ve got something cold and on the rocks waiting for you when you get home tonight.

Magpies and Martyrs

Tikrit Sunrise

Magpies and Martyrs

Magpies and martyrs,
Constellations and combat,
How beautiful this cradle of dust
and life.

Babylon’s lion roared as
Hanging gardens became
Bleeding walls, unchanged
by the repetition of time.

Called the land of beginnings
And the end; yet it is man
Who writes the finale
While nature’s blossoms bloom
From mass graves in memory
of their strife.

Life goes on despite
How we choose to spend
our time.

Okay, so this isn’t funny (obviously) but its something pulled out of my notebooks from back when I spent some time over in Iraq. Forgetting the good, the bad and everything that has to do with people, man just let me tell you I have never seen such beautiful sunrises and sun sets (that picture up there is actually one I took in the morning just to show you what I mean). And the stars! Most of us couldn’t even fathom how many stars you can see out there at night. I’m glad I had the chance to see that land despite all the rest. Anywho, this is one of my earlier works from sitting in the dust with a notebook and watching one of those funny little foxes going by. Hope you enjoy!
